Why Thessaloniki

Two thousand years of history, and a pulse that never stops

Thessaloniki isn't a city you simply see; you live it. Founded in 315 BC and a capital of empires for centuries, it stacks Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and Sephardic layers one on top of the other: the Rotunda and the Arch of Galerius, the walls of the Upper Town (Ano Poli), and the Palaeochristian churches inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage.

And right alongside all that, a city fully alive. The White Tower and the Nea Paralia seafront with Zongolopoulos' 'Umbrellas', Aristotelous Square opening onto the Thermaic Gulf, the Ladadika quarter that stays up all night, cafés that turn into bars and bars that turn into dance floors. Greece's largest student city never really sleeps.

And then there's the food, perhaps the most honest reason to fall for it. Breakfast of bougatsa and koulouri, lunch of mezedes and tsipouro, dinner rooted in the cuisine the refugees of Asia Minor and Pontus brought with them. We gather it all here (the sights, the stays, the tables, the events) so you don't miss a thing.
