The Church of Saint Demetrios is Thessaloniki's most important religious monument, dedicated to the city's patron saint. It is the largest church in Thessaloniki, with a deep history and a living devotional life.
History
This large five-aisled basilica was originally built in the 5th–7th centuries on the site of an earlier Roman bath where, by tradition, the saint was imprisoned and martyred. It was damaged in the 1917 fire and carefully restored to its original form.
