The Byzantine Walls are the signature walk of the Upper Town and one of Thessaloniki's finest viewpoints — free and open around the clock.
History
With origins in the 4th century and reinforcements in the Byzantine period, the walls once encircled the entire city, from the sea to the acropolis. They survive for a great length in the Upper Town, along with towers and gates.
Why it's worth it
Walking along them — especially around the Trigoniou Tower — gives a panoramic view over the whole city and the gulf. It is the locals' favourite spot for sunset.
Good to know
Part of the UNESCO monuments. Combine them with Vlatades Monastery and the Heptapyrgion on an Ano Poli walk; wear comfortable shoes for the cobbles.
