The western terminus, beneath the main railway station, your first contact with the city if you arrive by train.
The network's western terminus sits directly beside Thessaloniki's main railway station. If you arrive by train from Athens, Larissa, Edessa or Serres, you step off the carriage and into the metro without going out to the street.
Where it puts you
At the western edge of the centre, in the Vardaris district. This isn't a tourist neighbourhood; it's the city's practical gateway, with intercity buses, shops and a strongly multicultural character.
Get off here for
- Trains to and from the rest of Greece.
- The Vardaris area and the surviving traces of the western walls.
Good to know
The historic centre is only 3–4 stops away. If you're carrying luggage, the metro is clearly faster and cheaper than a taxi stuck in Egnatia traffic.
