Panagia Chalkeon is an elegant "jewel" of middle-Byzantine architecture, tucked away next to the market — easy to walk past, a shame to miss.
History & architecture
Built in 1028, it stands out for being constructed entirely of brick, with characteristic domes — a typical example of the "Constantinople school". It takes its name from the coppersmiths (chalkeis) who worked in the area (hence its nickname, the "Red Church").
Good to know
It stands on Chalkeon Street, next to the Kapani market in the centre. It is one of the UNESCO monuments.
