Navarinou & Rotonda

Between Kamara and the sea lies Thessaloniki's most youthful neighbourhood. Here the Roman ruins aren't behind railings; they're the backdrop where students drink their coffee.

Character & history

Navarinou Square is built around the ruins of the Palace of Galerius (4th century AD), part of the same imperial plan as the Rotunda and the Arch. The Dimitriou Gounari pedestrian street links the two, running down toward the seafront.

What to see

• The Rotunda, the imposing 4th-century circular building, a UNESCO monument with mosaics.
• The Arch of Galerius (Kamara), the city's classic meeting point.
• The open palace ruins set into the square itself.

Coffee, food & going out

The area is packed with student cafés, cheap souvlaki spots and bars. It's one of the few places where the city feels just as alive on a Tuesday night as on a Saturday.

Getting around

Completely walkable, right beside the centre and a short stroll from the Aristotle University.

Best for: a young atmosphere, affordable food, and history woven into daily life.
